Phuket Weekend Market
Locals and foreigners alike love to hang out with their family and friends at the Phuket Weekend Market, where stall upon stall serves up delectable delights to savor amidst the throngs of people, shopping til they drop from either the heat or exhaustion. unless you quench your thirst with a Leo ( as the Thais do). It’s one of my all time favorite hang out places ( maybe its the oyster stall that does it for me, or the fish cakes) and our daughter loves to see the myriad of bright colours from the alters and lights that glitter each stall.
Phuket Weekend Market ( known as Na Ka Market to Phuketians) is frequented by loads of tourists as well as locals; if you are a farang taking a walk in Phuket Town or Chalong, chances are you will have at least one tuk tuk or taxi ask you if you want to go to the market. Aka, it’s the place to hang out on the weekend, for everyone.
Some of our personal highlights of a trip to the weekend market include:
Buying a bag of steamed cockles and eating them next to a banyan
Having oysters shucked for us, and eating them Thai style ( garlic, chili, etc)
Eating dinner at one of the many side restaurants that are really cheap and serve up great Thai dishes
Getting a freshly squeezed orange juice from one of the stands
Buying steamed corn for Kaya
So, yeah, the weekend market is more about food for us than about shopping. But there are some cool shops I want to check out when we next go back, including some cute clothing places, a book shop, and bootleg DVDs ( hey, this is Thailand folks). Despite the popularity of Na Ka Market, I personally prefer the one at Saphan Hin. We went for the first time a week ago and loved the live music, carnival rides, and yes food. Tons of it. It also ( get this) has almost zero tourists. In fact I don’t think I saw a single one!! It’s has more space too so it’s better if you have kids ( Phuket Weekend Market gets really crowded and very hot).
Whichever market you choose to visit, you’ll be greeted by good food and lots of shopping options!
